Read The Thousandth Floor and The Dazzling Heights before continuing!Īmidst the high-tech luxury and futuristic glamour of Manhattan’s thousand-storey super-tower, give wealthy teenagers are keeping dangerous secrets. I actually read this book over a month ago, however I kept notes of my thoughts throughout my reading, so, without further ado, let’s begin! Today I’m reviewing the final book in The Thousandth Floor trilogy by Katharine McGee: The Towering Sky. It’s been a while since I’ve written a review, but I’m slowly getting back into the swing of writing again. ‘ “Didn’t you feel me, loving you from across the ocean?” ‘ Katharine McGee, The Towering Sky He exceeded expectations by completing the course in an impressive six hours, a time significantly faster than the average finishing time. The Morro Bay event was Matt’s inaugural Ironman 70.3 race. The Ironman event culminated with a half marathon (13.1 miles) run. The swim in the bay was followed by a demanding 56-mile bike ride along the coast to San Simeon and back. The water temperature in the bay, which is inhabited by sea otters and sea lions, averaged a chilling 53 to 58 degrees, posing a daunting challenge for the more than 2,000 participants who swam the 1.2-mile course. These individuals had meticulously prepared themselves for this grueling event, dedicating countless hours to training and participating in practice races such as Sprint and Olympic events throughout April and May.ĭespite their extensive preparation, the race presented the group with unique obstacles to overcome. Participating from Canyon Lake were Maria Kivrizis, Matt Kivrizis, Lainie Cooney, Mark Yegsigian, Carly Yegsigian, Glenn Anderson, David Berman, Karin Cassidy, and Megan Falcon. The 70.3-mile event included a 1.2 mile swim, a 56-mile cycling course and a 13.1 mile run. Seven talented athletes from Canyon Lake took on the formidable challenge of the Ironman 70.3 race held in Morro Bay Saturday. Seven Canyon Lakers take on 70.3 Ironman race Promise takes on the page-turning pacing of a mystery while remaining solidly literary. When Jo finds a baby in her yard, she assumes it is her brother, and the premise is set for this impressive novel. During the storm, both Promise and Jo’s baby brother are lost. Son McNair, Jo’s older brother, raped Dovey’s granddaughter, resulting in a light-skinned baby boy named Promise. The Grand’homme and McNabb families are connected by more than just the intimate laundry that Dovey sorts through weekly-they are also irrevocably linked by a despicable act. In her second novel, Minrose Gwin ( The Queen of Palmyra) harnesses the intensity of the tornado and pieces together a dual narrative of survival.ĭovey Grand’homme is an old African-American washwoman, and Jo McNabb is a white 15-year-old schoolgirl. The stories and folklore surrounding the storm flourished for decades-a woman found a baby in a crepe myrtle, a cow flew upside down, etc. More than 200 people were reported dead, and the hundreds of African-American casualties were not even counted. On Sunday, April 5, 1936, a tornado devastated Tupelo, Mississippi. I had the privilege of escorting Faith Ringgold through the Children’s Museum exhibit, which looked like the roof top of a high-rise building, only this one had reading nooks and play areas galore. I’ll always remember the part of the story when Cassie flies through the sky, imagining the lights on the George Washington Bridge as her sparkly, diamond necklace. (The asphalt roof made it “tar beach.”) While the parents would play cards with friends, Cassie would lie on a mattress, look up at the stars, and imagine she could fly. Instead, her mother, father, and little brother would go up to the roof of their apartment building to escape the summer heat inside. Because the story is set in the early 1930s when public beaches were segregated, Cassie’s family couldn’t go to the area beaches. In Tar Beach, the artist tells the story of an eight-year-old girl named Cassie Lightfoot, who lives in Harlem with her family. I vividly recall a wonderful exhibit at that museum called Tar Beach, which was based on Ringgold’s story quilt and her book of the same name (which is available in the VMFA Shop). Many years ago, I lived in New York City and served on the board for Children’s Museum of Manhattan, a great organization. |
